Alpha Pi Sigma was founded on March 10, 1990 at San
Diego State University. The Beta Chapter was established on March
1, 1996 at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Then
in March of 2000 the Gamma Chapter was established at California
State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo and the Delta Chapter
at University of California, Riverside.
Latina women from a variety of backgrounds came together to form
an organization that would unite and support Latina women on each
campus. The Ladies of Alpha Pi Sigma pride themselves in holding
their education in highest regard. They believe that campus involvement,
academics, leadership, and community service are methods to achieve
success at the University level. Other objectives of the Sorority
include promoting members academically, personally, and professionally.
Although Alpha Pi Sigma identifies itself as a Latina based sorority,
it does not discriminate against any ethnic group and welcomes all
women that are interested in the Alpha Pi Sigma experience. A central
tenet of Alpha Pi Sigma is promoting unity amongst women interested
in the Latino culture.
The
following are the Formal Purposes which Alpha Pi Sigma have successfully
maintained and will continue to preserve:
1.
To encourage and promote the academic excellence of our members
through the establishment of study groups, tutoring services, and
mentoring.
2. To establish a scholarship fund to benefit members of the organization
and/or transfer and high school students.
3. To inspire unity, friendship, and sisterhood among its members.
4. To promote and develop the attainment of leadership skills for
its members in order to serve the organization and the Latino community.
5. To further the professional careers of its members through networking
with professionals in the community.
6. To encourage cultural awareness and interest in helping the Latino
Community through volunteer work.
